Uber adds Tube and bus London public transport travel info to its app

Uber is integrating London public transport information into its app in a bid to compete with navigation apps including Citymapper and Google Maps.

Tube, train, bus, tram, shuttle and boat information data is now available under a Public Transport feature, providing users with fastest route, real-time schedules and walking directions to and from stops and stations.

Transport for London (TfL) said it was not involved in the new feature and that Uber was using its publicly-available data.

The government body revoked Uber’s licence to operate in the city after deciding it was not a “fit and proper” operator in September 2017, but the decision was overturned when the taxi company made a number of concessions last summer.

Uber announced a partnership with free public transit app Moovit in February, allowing it to draw live-time data, in addition to TfL’s bus and Tube information.

“We ultimately want to be the platform for anyone in any part of the city, not just in the centre, to come to if they’re going from place A to B,” he told i.

“We want to do that same thing for food, we’ve got effort in enterprise, for example, with freight. We want to be that go-to mobility platform, whether you’re going to move on a car, or a bike, or ultimately the bus and the Tube service.”

Uber confirmed passengers passing through London’s congestion zone would be charged an extra £1 per journey earlier this month. It announced its intentions for all cars operating on its platform in London to be fully electric by 2025 in a bid to tackle air pollution in the capital in October.
